South of Market, also known as simply "SoMa", was a warehouse-filled district which turned into a wealthy area at the end of the 20th century. Warehouses were converted into high-end loft apartments. Fashionable bars and trendy restaurants opened to serve the new locals. Nowadays, a new well-off generation leave in South of Market, which is considered as a growing high-end residential neighbourhood. The views of the district changed dramatically, mostly in terms of architecture as Patrick's Church is juxtaposed against modern offices and Daniel Libeskind’s striking Contemporary Jewish Museum. The expansive neighbourhood south of Market Street is distinguished by a few pockets of special interest as it is home to prominent museums, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Cartoon Art Museum, and the California Historical Society.
