The village of Castelli is situated in the province of Teramo, in the North East of Rome. Built on a wooded promontory at the foot of Mount Carmicia, this charming town has become popular since the 13th century due to its remarkable ceramics. Between the rivers Rio and Leomogna, Castelli is a favourite destination for tourists and art lovers. For its vicinity to the Gran Sasso of Italy, the village is an ideal base of departure for the excursions and ascensions to the higher mount of Central Italy.

From April to October, it is the best moment to enjoy Rome as the weather is particularly favourable and places are less crowded in April/May and in September/October. However, during the Holy Week in Easter and the Rome marathon, millions of tourists converge to Rome to attend these international events.

Peak Season
juil. 01 - août 31

The months of July and August correspond to the hottest period in Rome, with suffocating temperatures. But the numerous "Nasoni" fountains, with fresh and drinkable water, allow to quench your thirst between two tours.

Church of San Donato

Situated one kilometer away from the town of Castelli, the small Church of San Donato is an authentic Italian place with a magnificent ceiling made between 1615 and 1617 and entirely decorated with sixteenth century polychrome bricks with coats-of-arms, arabesque, human figures and animals painted on ceramic. This is the maximum expression of the art of ceramics in Castelli, and as such, this beautiful majolica ceiling earned the nickname "The Sixtine Chapel of Majolica".

The Acerbo Museum of Ceramics

The Acerbo Museum of Ceramics was established in 1957 by the architect Leonardo Palladini. Located in the cloister of an ancient convent, the Museum displays, among others, the famous collection of Baron Giacomo Acerbo, composed of more than 550 ceramics dating drom the 16th to the 19th centuries, almost all made in Castelli itself. Throughout the six rooms of the museum, visitors will admire the ceramics displayed in a chronological order as well as the working methods and fragments discovered during archeological research.

Gran Sasso National Park
