Vieux Port is the historical neighbourhood and the cradle of the city of Montreal, which has been the economic heart of Canada for decades, thanks to its banks on the Saint-Jacques Street and its warehouses along the river.
This neighbourhood was formerly surrounded by fortifications, which limited for a long time the expansion of the city.
In the past ten years, this neighbourhood faced a true real-estate boom. Lots of inhabitants moved to Vieux Port, which had been abandoned by department stores for over a century and which had been dropped by business companies in favour of a new center in the North. Nowadays, condos, luxury properties, boutiques, art galleries and upscale restaurants have replaced closed down warehouses. The Vieux Port neighbourhood is a trendy place to discover.

After a decrease between 2011 and 2014, the real-estate market has risen by 5% regarding the number of properties sold in Montreal in 2016. Thousands of condos have been built in the region of Montreal these last years and many of them are still unoccupied and still on the housing market. According to real-estate experts, 2017 would be characterized by a slowing down of sells due to new mortgage loan measures. However, the growth of the employment market and the low unemployment rate should boost property sells.

Even though Montreal could be visited all year long, the period from November to March is the coldest one. However, it is an incredible experience to visit Montreal under the snow as it lights from lots of colors during the Christmas and New Year's Eve period. During winter, precipitation is mainly in the form of snow and totals often exceed 2 meters.

From April to October, the weather conditions are more pleasurable, with a mildness climate. In autumn, Montreal is a postcard landscape with magnificent colours and perfectly represents what the Indian summer is.  The city has a tremendous life during important events such as Halloween or Thanksgiving.

From June to September, you will enjoy the hottest temperatures, with a clear blue sky. This is the period of the year chosen by most of foreign tourists to visit Montreal. Therefore, with a important affluence, prices are at their highest, regarding air transport and accommodation. However, you will experience international events such as the Montreal Jazz Festival, the "Juste pour Rire" Festival as well as the African Nights and lots of other cultural events.

A taste of the Caribbean Festival

Great Chefs from the Caribbean and from Montreal will propose you a large range of delicious dishes and tasty beverages punctuated with Island flavoured styles. Taste the famous Jamaican jerk chicken or the spicy Barbadian and Grenadian rums and explore these islands in a sampling way. Organized on the Bonsecours island, this event proposes to experience a rich and cultural discovery of the Caribbean. Indeed, renowned reggae artists will perform, but other kinds of music will be presented: metallic drums music, Calypsonian singers, artists and artisans, Caribbean orchestra as well as folk dancers. There will also be an unmissable coloured street carnival with a Trinity style. A taste of the Caribbean is an exotic feast for senses.

The Clock Tower of Montreal

Also called the "Sailors' Memorial Tower", this monument was built in 1921 by F.W. Cowie and renovated in 1984. It was a tribute to the sailors of the merchant navy dead during the World War I. The tower has a spectacular clock and a huge lamp to guide boats and it allows to hide the voluminous installations along the Victoria pier.
Originally, the Clock Tower was linked with a turret thanks to an impressive wall. Nowadays, it is possible to visit it and to learn its history thanks to a historical center along its stairs. There is also a vantage point at the place of the lamp, which provides a breathtaking view on the Old Port.

The Notre-Dame-De-Bon-Secours Chapel

For more than 350 years, this chapel has been a historical and heritage jewel for generations of visitors and pilgrims. Once you enter this monument, there is a particular feeling of peacefulness and serenity while discovering the old Montreal. Built in 1771 on the vestiges of the first pilgrimage chapel, you will admire two works of Ozias Leduc which represents Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve, the founder of Montreal, and Marguerite Bourgeoys, the founder of Notre-Dame congregation in 1655. Explore this exceptional monument which will make you travel in time.
