Punta Leona is currently home to the only remaining jungles found in the area of transitional life between the jungles of the southwest and the dry forests of the northwest.

Created over 25 years ago to protect the region's varied flora and fauna, the Punta Leona refuge is a 300-hectare (750-acre) reserve consisting primarily of lush primary and secondary rainforests. It also functions as a research center for birds and mammals, and is habitat for more than 330 birds and migrants and natives of different species. Exotic, tropical and beautiful, the refuge of Punta Leona was also the set for a Hollywood movie starring the famous French actor Gerard Depardieu.
