James Saunders

Jim started his public service career as a deputy sheriff in Buchanan County Iowa, where he was born and raised. After his future wife, Janet, graduated from college they contemplated their next steps. Excited about a new adventure, they quickly decided on California and settled in the coastal community of Pacifica located 9 miles south of San Francisco. There, Jim continued his public service work as a police officer for the city of Pacifica. Janet started her own business (Jim helped) managing multiple nonprofit organizations for over 17 years. After 30 years and rising to the rank of Chief of Police, Jim retired in 2010. They sold their home in Pacifica and moved to Mt. Shasta, in northern California, where they had a rental property for over 20 years. They oversaw the rehab of that house and prepared it for sale. In the meantime, they were looking for a place to retire and happened upon Cape Coral/Fort Myers while vacationing in Florida. They immediately connected with the area and knew this paradise was for them. They sold their rental property in California and moved to Florida. They have lived in the Sandoval community in Cape Coral since June of 2014 and they love the city, their community and their host of friends. One of their passions is shelter and service animals. They began their volunteerism in the 80s as puppy raisers for Canine Companions for Independence. They continue to give back volunteering at the Animal Refuge Center, a no-kill shelter in North Fort Myers. In 2015 they adopted a dog from there named Woody, he goes with Janet to visit patients at hospitals, hospice centers and assisted living facilities as a registered pet therapy dog. He creates smiles wherever he goes. They have two grown children that still live in California. Their son Lucas lives in Los Angeles and their daughter Devyn resides in the San Francisco Bay Area.
