Giudecca - the largest of the islands of Venice and the closest to the historic center - owes its name, according to some, to the ancient presence of a Jewish community, testified by the existence of two synagogues, now destroyed, and by the discovery, in the area near the Zitelle, of a stone with inscriptions in Hebrew. According to others, however, the name derives from the term "zudegà", judged, which refers to a sentence issued in the ninth century with which land was granted to some families banished from Venice and then recalled from exile. The southern side of the island in ancient times represented the green area of Giudecca, with vegetable gardens and gardens where the Venetian nobility took refuge in summer and autumn.
